Pros and Cons
An honest read of this listing against the alternatives on the site.
What we genuinely like
- One price covers the cruise, all listed entries, matcha, the bridge and an oyster lunch, so you carry little cash beyond extras
- Private car for up to 4 with hotel pickup in Sendai or Matsushima, no train connections to manage
- 6.5 hours hits all the main sights with fixed minutes at each, guided in English, Japanese, Russian or Ukrainian
- Free cancellation up to 24 hours before, with reserve now and pay later
The honest downsides
- At $222 per person it is the most expensive per-head private option here that still caps the group at 4
- The listing is new with no reviews yet, so you book without a track record
- No return time or free time is stated, and the listing warns itineraries are subject to change
- It is a restaurant oyster lunch, not a boat harvest or hut experience, and no oysters are promised outside the season
- Additional food and drinks are excluded, and the includes text lists that exclusion without a label, so confirm on the booking page
Who it's NOT for: If you would rather pay less and cover your own entries and lunch, the Matsushima Private Guided Tour costs $106.72 per person for 6-7 hours, or the small-group Matsushima Bay Day Tour with Boat Cruise runs 8 hours at $168 with a market hour instead of a set lunch.
Before You Go
Pickup times, shoes, cash and the winter closing hours are the practical points. The listing and the official sites settle all of them.
Pickup, Shoes and Cash
Pickup is from hotels in Sendai, Matsushima or the local areas surrounding Matsushima, or JR Matsushima Station, at 8.30 AM for Sendai and 9.30 AM for Matsushima, varying with location. Bring comfortable shoes, water and cash. The day involves walking at Godaido over an open-slat bridge, steps at Zuiganji, garden paths at Entsuin and the 252-meter Fukuura Bridge walk, so wear shoes that grip.
Drones are not allowed. Children under 6 years cannot join, and no wheelchair access is stated.
Season and Winter
The listing states no season for the tour. What changes by month is the daylight: Zuiganji closes at 3:30 pm in January and December, and the last Nioumaru cruise sailing moves from 16:00 to 15:00 in winter because the sun sets early. Kanrantei and the Fukuura Bridge close at 16:30 from November to March.
In oyster season the lunch should be at its best. Ask the operator about the lunch menu if you travel outside October to March.

How the Tour Runs
The listing gives the order of stops and the minutes at each, with 50-minute car transfers at the start and end. No return time is stated, so the table prints only what the listing gives.
The Day in Order
Your driver collects you at your hotel in Sendai, Matsushima or the surrounding areas, or at JR Matsushima Station, at 8.30 AM for Sendai or 9.30 AM for Matsushima. A 50-minute car ride brings you to Godaido for a 30-minute photo stop and visit. The boat pier follows, then the cruise, Kanrantei, Zuiganji, Entsuin, lunch and the bridge walk.
A final 50-minute car ride returns you to Sendai. The listing adds that itineraries are subject to change.

The Places on This Tour
Eight stops between the car rides. The fees and hours below come from the temple, the town office and the cruise operator, useful if you compare the day with visiting alone.
Godaido
Godaido is Matsushima's oldest wooden structure, rebuilt in 1604 by Date Masamune, and it is the oldest surviving Momoyama architecture in Tohoku. You cross an open-slat bridge to reach it. Entry is free and it closes at dusk.
The Five Wisdom Kings statues are shown only once every 33 years. The bay itself holds 260 small pine-covered islands and ranks as one of the Three Views of Japan.
| Stop | Official fee | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Godaido | Free | Closes at dusk |
| Bay cruise | $9.54 (¥1,500) adults, $4.77 (¥750) elementary | Nioumaru leaves hourly 9:00-16:00, last sailing 15:00 in winter |
| Zuiganji | $6.36 (¥1,000) adults, $3.18 (¥500) children | Gate opens 8:30 am, closing 3:30 pm-5:00 pm by month, last entry 30 minutes before |
| Kanrantei | $1.91 (¥300) adults, tea sets from $3.82 (¥600) extra | 8:30-17:00 April to October, 8:30-16:30 November to March |

Kanrantei and the Date Samurai
Kanrantei is the stop where the samurai theme comes closest. The Date family built the bay's temple halls, and this tea house belonged to their world.
A Former Samurai Tea House
Kanrantei is a former samurai tea house. You get 30 minutes here for matcha and Japanese sweets while looking over the bay. The connection to the Date clan runs through the whole route: Date Masamune rebuilt Godaido in 1604 and rebuilt Zuiganji, the Zen temple you visit afterwards for 40 minutes.
Zuiganji's main hall has been a national treasure since 1953. Entry to Kanrantei alone would cost $1.91 (¥300) plus tea from $3.82 (¥600), all covered in this tour's price.
Want More Date History
This tour stays in Matsushima. It does not visit Zuihoden, Masamune's mausoleum in Sendai, or Sendai Castle ruins. The Matsushima Private Guided Tour includes Zuihoden among its stops, and the Matsushima and Sendai Private Licensed-Guide Tour covers Zuihoden and the castle ruins in 8 hours.
When Oysters Are Good
Oyster season decides whether this lunch delivers what the tour name promises. The official season is fixed, and the listing adds no dates of its own.
The Season Window
The Matsushima tourist association says Matsushima oysters can be eaten from October to March, and oyster huts with all-you-can-eat shell oysters run in the same period, from November. This gives you a clear window for booking this tour: aim for November to March for the strongest oyster experience, at a hut or on a plate. The listing itself states no season for the tour and does not say what is served at lunch outside those months.
Off-season Bookings
If you travel between April and September, ask the operator before booking what the lunch at Unashin Ishidaya serves instead of oysters, since the listing promises fresh oysters without a season note. For an oyster-focused day in season with a private car, the Matsushima Oyster Season Private Car Tour adds an oyster hut stop, though its hut lunch there is a paid extra rather than included.

What the Oyster Lunch Costs Elsewhere
The oyster lunch is folded into the $222 here. The other way to eat oysters in Matsushima is an oyster hut, kakigoya, and that is a separate ticket.
Included Lunch Versus the Hut
At Unashin Ishidaya you get 40 minutes for lunch and food tasting with fresh oysters, already in the tour price. At the oyster huts you order and pay at the counter: the tourist association's hut calendar lists set meals and all-you-can-eat options with prices published in its season PDF, so check there for the current figure. Hut lunches are a paid extra on other tours too.
On the Matsushima Oyster Season Private Car Tour the oyster hut lunch is optional and at your cost, and on the Matsushima Private Guided Tour lunch is not included and neither is the guide's.
Other Oyster Days in the Calendar
If your trip falls around the festivals, the Matsushima Oyster Festival is held on the first Sunday of February and the Tairyo Oyster Festival at Isojima runs for Oyster Day on 23 November. Marubun Matsushima Kisen also runs a Kaki-nabe oyster hot pot cruise from November to late March, with fares not published on its event page.
What This Tour Is Not
This is a restaurant oyster lunch, not a harvest. You do not pull oysters from the water on a fishing boat or shuck them yourself. If you want that hands-on version, look at oyster experience bookings rather than this sightseeing day, or pair this tour with a hut visit on another day in season.
